During the Spring & Summer of 2008, May 10 - September 1, citizens of Faith and visitors to the prairie oasis, will have the rare opportunity to become time travelers to over 65 million years ago to the late Cretaceous Period. They will experience a once in a life spectacle, “A Tyrannosaurus Rex Named Sue Traveling Exhibit”. This nationally traveling exhibit comes courtesy of the world famous Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois, Mc Donald’s (Golden Arch’s), and the South Dakota Office of Tourism (Governor’s Million Dollar Challenge)-Great Faces, Great Places.Sue is the largest, most complete and best preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex ever unearthed. You will not want to miss this unique opportunity to see this spectacular, the full size cast of this dinosaur’s 42-foot-long, 13- foot-high skeleton and learn more about it’s intriguing past. To help answer some of the scientific questions about the life and times of Sue, 10 interactive educational pods will accompany Sue to Faith. This informative exhibition explores the paleontology that helped scientists reconstruct Sue’s life and legacy. Sue will be on display in the City of Faith Community Center. To compliment the Sue traveling exhibit, a schedule of events have been planned inside the Community Center and in the community of Faith. Inside the Community Center along with Sue will be the Dino stories Exhibit where young people can learn about Tyrannosaurus Rex and other interesting dinosaurs. Tour opportunities of nearby dig sites are being planned in collaboration with property owners and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indiana. A reception will be held for fossil hunters, sponsors of the traveling exhibit and members of the Faith Line Historical Center. You will want to be a part of this event. A community wide birthday celebration will be held on August 12, 2008, commemorating the day Sue was found near Faith by fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson. Grab your sleeping bag, pillow, pajamas, and flashlight because you will be able to slumber with Sue in an all night sleep over in the Community Center. If you would like to attend a panel discussion from the fossil hunters and scientists who have studied Sue there will be an educational seminar on their discoveries. On an artistic note, a variety of all kinds of music, art & poetry is being planned to honor Sue. If you are in a shopping mood there will be food and artist vendors adjacent to the Community Center. You will also want to stop by the Faith Line Historical Center & the Faith Chamber of Commerce to buy your official Sue memorabilia and tickets to see Sue. You can find ticket prices and corporate sponsorship opportunities through the new Faith Chamber of Commerce web site:www.faithsdchamber.com. The City of Faith hopes you will mark Faith on your calendars for next Summer. The dates once again are May 10-September 1. For more information about the Sue T. Parade of Lights a Success!!

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

On December 3rd, despite the bitter cold temperatures, the citizen’s of Faith gathered together to celebrate the holiday season.  At 5 pm, the street lights were extinguished and the festivities began.  With eleven entries, the parade was very colorful and full of lights.  I heard several positive comments on how glad that the holiday parade has returned to Faith.  The idea to bring the parade back to Faith was the Faith Ambulance committee. The most talked about entry would have had to be the City of Faith’s “Sue” entry.  Very nice!  After the parade, the Horizon’s committee held a social at the Legion Hall.  Snacks, cookies, bars, and lots of other treats along with apple cider and hot chocolate warmed approximately 88 people including a special appearance by Santa.  Most of the treats were provided by Faith businesses.

Paul Peterson, a Horizon’s member gave the audience an overview of the new strategic plan that the Horizon’s committee developed.  Nancy Reimer gave a short presentation about the community blog and invited the community to send items to post, comment on the current posts, and basically use the blog as a unified community bulletin board.

The prizes for the floats and door prizes were also presented at this time by Deb Brown and Shawn Peterson. The presentation concluded with an invitation to the audience to volunteer to help on the current projects that the Horizon’s team is working on.  In other words, the social was a huge success!!!

The Faith Ambulance is trying to bring a great Christmas event back to Faith.  They are hosting the PARADE OF LIGHTS on December 2nd on Main Street in Faith.  After the parade there will be a Family Social at the Legion on Main Street.  During this time there will be events for the kids including a visit from Santa and also the Faith Horizon’s group will be presenting the visions and goals for Faith that have been set forth in the meetings.  This is a very important step for the future of Faith and we are asking all of you to be a part of it.

There are also prizes for the various floats:
1.  Most Lights
2.  Most Religious
3.  Most Original
4.  Most Humorous
We would like to encourage each business to have a float and to encourage others to also have one. Our goal is to have a minimum of 15 floats.  This would give Faith a great reputation for the parade and also encourage people to attend from surrounding communities for years to come. Line-up will be at 4:30 on Longhorn Street in front of the Faith School, and to register your float please call Hoss or Cindy at 967-2091 or Shawn at 863-2267 or email speterson@takini.net.
